Manufacturing Chainguards

Post by Gun » Wed May 28, 2008 5:50 pm

I'm talking to some old folks here in town and got a few guys who'd be willing to manufactur some chainguards for the CB77 for 25-50bucks depending on the material.
I'd need some measurements as I don't have one myself.

Anyone out there willing to give me some measurements on an original chainguard? I plan on getting a few made for anyone on the site that would want one Hopefully we can keep the full price under 50 bucks (much nicer than the 140 for the reproductions currently out there).
Maybe i can convince one of these fellers to do it for cheaper if i get a couple made at once.
So if you can give me some measurements, or just want to sign up for getting one made, go ahead and post.

What is it with this “ I think somebody’s gonna make a buck” mentality?
GET REAL!!!!

Do you people not realize that the quality vendors, which you have so many problems with their prices, have invested their expertise, time, and money to provide “US” with the solutions to our problems. This is how these guys make their livelihood. They eat, sleep, and drink what we consider our “Hobby”. So what if a chain guard is 150 bucks or a set of badges are 50. Just how many sets do you need?
If we don’t support the vendors that support us, we eventually will lose all the valuable resources they supply.
This habit ain’t for the cheap. If you aren’t willing to pay the price…….. take up knitting.

I don't understand the necessity for the implied tone.
I appreciate that they've put forth the effort to supply us with the solution to our problems... But i don't fancy always having my problems solved by someone else. And at no point in time do I think that enjoying a cb77 should ONLY be a hobby available to retired folk who've already had 40+ years to enjoy them. I'm young, and I want to ride bikes for the same reason most of you older guys here did when you started riding them. The freedom, the adventure, the go.
I'm not trying to swindle anybody, mister. But I'm not exactly putting away a few thousand extra dollars a paycheck. I get by. I work two jobs (computer tech full time, illustrator part time) And I don't splurge on much at all, yet I don't have much money in the bank, what with schooling and all. I'm sorry that my fanancial senario isn't ideal to what you feel should be necessary to enjoy a CB77... but work as I may, I can't change that. I'm just trying use my resources and gumption to acquire something I can't otherwise afford. And if an old timer at a heating vent company can cut me a chain guard for 25 bucks, and I can get a few done for others in my similar position, then I'm going to go right ahead and do that.
If i was looking for a museum restore, sure $150 badges would be swell. But I'm not. I'm looking to enjoy my bike as much as I can and ride it daily as long as my back will allow it.
Sorry that we don't see eye to eye on this.
Thanks for your input however, it certainly shed some light on a concept I didn't give much thought to previous, even if my actions will go unchanged.

I guess thats what it boils down to...
should a college kid be allowed to work on, restore, and ride CB's taking financial restrictions into account?

thoughts?

I answer them in hopes of being replied to and acquiring more knowledge on the topic.
It would seem you don't fancy me too much, but I would like to thank you for what knowledge you did share with me before you decided that. What you did share went a long ways towards my bike. and if ever there is a thank you list, you're on it.

edit:
No, you're right. I'm bored.
When working on computers all day, i have to wait for programs to install or formats to take place... so i just browse this forum and ebay, read wikipedia alot :P

I ask because you reply so often. At times I sort of wonder why so I ask you the question. I don't dislike you for sure I just thought I'd ask. .....................lm
