tail light crapout

Post by allthumbs » Fri May 23, 2008 1:04 pm

It seems that everything is now working on my Cb except the damn tail light. wiring inspection shows nothing. filament is good. I get no reading on my volt reader at the wires behind the tail lamp.

I check all the connectors, a little shotty but covered and connected. put bike back together and NO electric at all.

I check the battery and it's strong.

my question is- do you think a new and charged battery could fry an already weak rectifier? rendering my whole bike inoperable?

I changed batteries yesterday and rode it around the block, it had a great spark and all the elec worked great.

This new mess happened this morning

Both wires will have 12 volts. One when the head light switch is turned on. One will have the 12 volts when you depress the foot brake lever. Both depend on ground at the light socket which is grounded to the zinc plated part the socket is mounted to. That plate must be touching bare metal of the license plate bracket tnd that bracket must do the same to the fender. SOmetimes the small wire at the socket is broken but very often if the parts have been painted there won't be a ground to the socket until the paint is removed at the same location on all parts. ......................lm

Thanks for the response

well I get nothing back there in either wire. I did get the rest of the bike's elec. back. the fuse holder was compromised. but still nothing at the tail light. the ground wire like you say, is intact

I traced it though with the wiring diagram. seems connected everywhere
