Wheel SpokesWheel SpokesThe parts manual shows four different part numbers for spokes on the late model 1967 with 10" drum CL77. The Front wheel inner spoke A #97547521471 (20 each), the Front wheel outer spoke B #97392521481 (20 each) 40 total. The Rear wheel inner spoke A #42611273010 (18 each), and the Rear wheel outer spoke B #42647273010 (18 each) 36 total. Are these actually four different spokes, or is there any differences/dimensions or lengths between the inner and outer and front and rear? I will be re-chroming and spoking the Wheel Rims on my CL77 restoration, and any insight would be gratefully appreciated. Also, any preferences on chrome versus stainless spokes, weren't the originals chrome or nickel?
Re: Wheel SpokesYes, there can be, and usually are, both inner and outer spokes. The front and rear rims are different and so have different spokes. Here is a link to a parts manual that shows the differences: CL77 Parts Manual. If you can find NOS spokes that would be best. Ideally you want the the spoke just to reach the slot on the nipple and certainly not go beyond the nipple.
The originals were chromed as far as I know but stainless has the advantage of not rusting so it would be my choice. Unless you are planning to show the bike as a show room restoration no one will care or even notice. And, your nipples will never stick. Re: Wheel SpokesYes, I've the CL77 & CL72 Parts Manual. This is where I found the information, pictures and part numbers for both early and later models. It shows both the earlier version bikes with 8.75" hubs and the later version with 10" hubs. I was curious as to the actual difference in the inner and outer spoke however, I do not see a physical difference.
Since I have a later model 1967 CL77 I just want to insure I get the right spokes and nipples.
Re: Wheel SpokesYou may have a different version of the parts book. Look at the Front Wheel and Rear Wheel pages of the one I linked and you will see the different angles. You mention a change in hub diameter so be sure you get the right ones. My experience is that the online vendors are happy to help by email or phone.
Re: Wheel SpokesThank you so much, my parts manual did not have the exploded view of the inner and outer front and rear spokes. This will clarify and help me in purchasing the correct spoke set for my wheels, whether chrome or stainless. I'm leaning toward chrome since the bike is primarily for show, I'm to old or past my time to be bussing around on these anymore. Thank you again for your assistance.
