Partnumber of gasket

Post by tore » Mon Oct 14, 2024 7:32 am

The CB77 seems to have two versions of the cam chain tensioner. One narrow and one wide. The part number for the gasket the wider one seems to be available. The wider one seems also be part of the gasket sets available for CB77. What is the part number for the narrow version?

Here's a parts list that you can download. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ngk-RJ ... drive_link

This contains a part number for the late gasket. It's funny that Honda made so many changes only months before discontinuing production on these bikes. I have never seen a late style gasket in a gasket set either and I've never seen one for sale. You may have to buy some gasket paper and make your own.

I didn't even know the narrow version of the tensioner existed until I found a nice NOS one in my parts collection.

From the CB77 parts manual:

"Packing, cam chain tensioner"

Model - Part Number - Engine serial number

CB77E - 14591-258-000 - 100001 to 1050998 (Wide - Early)

CB77E - 14591-259-000 - 1050999 to => (Narrow - Late)

Have seen both early and late gaskets listed from various suppliers.

Thanks a lot!

Is the narrow the older version?
Seems that the wider one is far more available.
Not sure how accurate the serial numbers are in the parts lists. I have two engines, One on the bike and one spare engine.
The one on the bike has 103xxx and the spare engine 10503xx. The spare engine has shallow splines and narrow chain tensioner. I am pretty sure the previous owners has swapped at least some parts between the engines.
The bike is made 1966 or 1967 so the higher number is likely the original engine on the bike. That newer engine had been running with low oil pressure so the cams etc are blue. I found a manufacturing mistake on the gearbox main shaft which led to the oil oozing out on the clutch basket which likely gave a very low oil pressure.

14591-258-000 is the Early, narrow version.

You could play it safe and order one of each gasket,

My apologies for making a mistake in my earlier posting. It should be:

"Packing, cam chain tensioner"

Model - Part Number - Engine serial number

CB77E - 14591-258-000 - 100001 to 1050998 (Wide - Early)

CB77E - 14591-259-000 - 1050999 to => (Narrow - Late)
