Starter chain on CB77

I am fairly new to vintage 4-stroke bikes. My first is a CB77. The starter has a terrible noise. Sounds like the chain sprocket is skipping inside the chain. The current chain is a 219.60 chain. I can see it is too slack. Have approx 2cm slack.
Saw that the manuals and the chains for sale are 219.58 chains. Bought one of those. It is very much too short - can not possible be installed.
I saw a few threads discussing the starter chain length and it seems that the best bet is a 219.60 chain.
My CB77 is basically a mix of part from different models so my question is: Can it be that some parts for the starter are mixed up with some other model? How do detect which is not correct?

Any ideas of much slack the starter chain normally has when everything is in a good shape?

2 cm is definitely a lot of slack so I'm not surprised by the noise. You want about 1 cm. I don't know anything about chain sizing so I can't help there. And, without some pictures, the quoted questions are unanswerable although the enormous slack suggests that something is very wrong.

My parts manual describes the chain as CHAIN, STARTING (DK219, 58L) 28101-253-000 with a master link JOINT, CAM CHAIN (DK219) 14411-259-000. Note that the master link is also used in the cam chain so if you can find a cam chain you can cut it to length and buy a master link. I think both are still available on Ebay.

My only experience with replacing internal chains is with the primary drive chain. I really hope you don't need one.

With reasonable number of shims I managed to get the chain slack down to 2-3 mm for the 219.60 chain. To get a 219.58 to fit i need roughly 10mm lower starter. A number of boxes with parts came with the bike. In total I have 4 starters. All look different but with same fit so either none is to a CB77 or the chain has to be a 229.60. Anyway the rattle is gone. It is however still making noise. It might be the gears inside the starter motor now. Is this common?

Yes it starts. Sounds ok for some time and makes metallic noise for some time. This goes in periods. The engine starts fine with the starter

There should not be noises like the ones you described. The starter isn't silent but should just sound like an electric motor.

Could you send a picture of the region of interest and your line-up of starters?

I have lot of spares to it so I installed another starter motor from the spares box. This one whines a lot but does not have and metallic noises.
I did not adjust the slack on the chain. It is around 10mm. Saw the chain is skidding a lot on the big sprocket. The sprocket does not look like it is weared down. Could indicate the pitch is wrong for that gear. Are there several versions of this gear?
