TIRE QUESTION, accepted sizes

i have a superhawk with 3.0 on the front and a 4.1 on the back. the are new and look like the correct type that originally shipped with the bike. Knobby on the back and long groves on the front. I am looking for a good street tire and have read here that the dunlop is good. i know that the originals were 2.75 on the front and 3.0 on the back. my question is how large a tire can i put on the bike. would i be better of with a bigger tire for daily driving. with the option of a bigger tire i may have more choices of available tires as well. any help would be appreciated.

Mark, You can't get away with too much bigger than stock on the rear. a 3.50 to 3.75(aproximate sizes) is about it. I don't know how a 4.10 knobby would even fit on your bike, usually to put on one that big means lengthening the chain and moving the adjusters all the way back. I know, I've done it! One thing you'll find is oversizing the rear tire on a CB77-72 really affects the performance. They were designed to function well inside a very precise set of peramiters, you change one thing and it leads to changing other things just to get your performance back to original numbers. These are never gonna be a great hill climber(again,tried it) Besides they are just too much fun to ride
when they are tuned right and every thing is as it was designed at the factory! Can I get an AMEN!! Kustommusic

Amen brother! If you want a more modern tread pattern, check out Avon tires. 90/90 rear, and 80/90 front. They are reasonably priced, and are very modern in appearence and handling.

the 4.1 knobby came with the bike and i want to swap out the new tires that came with the bike to a better handling tires. if i go with a modern tire should i stick to 2.75 (front) and 3.00 (rear) factory spec or is it better to go with a 3.0 3.25 or 3.00 3.50 setup?

I'd recommend sticking to stock sizes for best handling and performance. Putting too large of a tire on to small of a rim changes the profile of the tire, and adversley affects handling. I have a 90/90 front, and a 100/90 rear on my cafe Superhawk, but I also laced up one size wider rims front and rear.

On my cafe I used NOS Borrani shouldered alloy rims, WM3 rear and WM2 front. Tires are Avon road runners, 100/90 rear, and 90/90 front. I would ahve preffereda 80/90 front, but struggled to find one. On deez cafe, we ordered excel shouldered aluminum rims from Buchannon, same sizes as mine, and same tires.
