CL77 Clutch cable and perch question

Post by xring10 » Mon Mar 30, 2020 12:04 am

Hi. My 68 305 Scrambler, frame no. cl77-1048169 has the conventional type clutch (and front brake) cable and perch setup. It does not have the cables with the large adjuster wheel, and the wire spring lock, or the perches with the 'pins' that the wire spring rests on. It has the CA77 type cables with the slotted adjuster screw and round locknut, and no pins on the perches. My question is, was there an early and late cable and perch design, or was the bike converted to the CA style cables. My parts book only shows the large adjuster wheel cables, 22870-273-010 for the clutch, 45450-273-010 for the front brake. Any help is appreciated. Don

The CL lever perches and levers with the wire springs and large diameter adjusters were discontinued towards the end of the production run and replaced with the standard CB72/77 levers and perches, just with longer cables.

American Honda issued a Parts Bulletin on this in June 1967.Affected bikes start at Frame No CL77-10**7978 , the asterisks appear in the Honda Bulletin, don't ask me why.

If yours is a late bike you probably have the correct equipment fitted.

Some years ago I helped a UK CL77 owner locate and replace the levers and cables on his CL with the 'correct' type only to find that his was late bike and already had the right (CB77 style) bits fitted!

Thanks DJM, That's good info. I'm tracking both the clutch and front brake cables, as mine are shot. I found some information that stated the clutch cable for a CL160 will fit properly, even though it has a different part no. It appears to be the same cable in the photos I looked at on Ebay. Still doing the research.

I found another copy of the American Honda Bulletin. This one doesn't have the asterisks in it!

The change of levers and cables happened at Frame No. CL77- 1047978 so I'm guessing your bike has a later number than that?

Yes, my frame number is CL77-1048169, so that places it in the 'late' category for the cable and perch design. Now I'm starting to wonder if a set of CB-77 might interchange. Unless they have the bent metal tube on the lever end of the cables, like the CA-77. OK, I'm going back to doing more research! Thanks.

It's only the C/CA cables that had the chrome elbows on the cables. A set of CB levers and perches will fit, in fact identical with your originals. Standard CB cables will be too short though on account of the higher bars. Actually the CB cables came in at least two different lengths to suit the flat and then semi-raised bar but I think both will be too short or the High CL bars.

If it helps I can measure the standard CL front brake and clutch cables for you.

The levers and perch's are not the same for the CB77 and CL77 bikes. ................lm
