1965 Dream starter clutch

Post by Hfb1957 » Mon Jul 29, 2019 2:40 pm

Hi I have a 1965 Dream that I have been tinkering with. The starter clutch was slipping so I bought new parts for it. While I was putting it back together I noticed that the housing has a crack in it. I went ahead and installed the clutch but it is still slipping. Any ideas on if the crack will cause this or could it be the gear. Thanks in all your help.

What do you mean by 'the housing'?

In general parts with visible cracks in them aren't good news.

the silver part that is screwed down with three screws and the part that holds the spring, pin , and roller bearing.

A crack there is certainly bad news and will allow the starter housing to flex and the rollers to loose contact with the sprocket.

Either find a new rotor complete or just the back section, if you just change the rear section be sure to tighten the three screws REALLY tight and to stake them in place the same way the originals were. Some Loctite might be good insurance too.

If you do this and fit the new rollers, springs and caps you already have, the starter should be fine.
