Chunk missing from engine case

But to my surprise it is NOT leaking out of the seal with a chunk missing. Once I got it good and clean, I discovered it is leaking from behind the washer on the gear shift rod. I assume there is a seal back behind the washer, but how do I get to it? There seems to be a retaining ring holding the washer on, but it goes all the way around the rod, and I dont see how to remove it. Thanks for all the help so far. Take a look at this schematic.
