Cl77 Gearing?

Hi im new to this forum. I was driving through town the other day and saw what appeared to be a good condition 1966 scrambler pretty cheap. Im now considering picking it up. The only fault i have found with the scramblers is their gearing. I read that they're geared much lower than the hawks because of their intended offroad use. I was just wondering how difficult it would be to re gear it like a hawk. Is it just a matter of a sprocket swap or are the transmissions totally different?

Simple sprocket change/ 16T front and a 35T rear makes an interesting combinatio. Some even swap the 1st/2ng gear inside, but that didn't seem to hold up well on the clutch plates. Made the gears closer together or something.

The CL77 came with 15--37 sprockets. Now keep in mind that both wheels are 19 inch other than 18 like the CB77so top speed isn't all that bad when you compare the 2 bikes. I can tell ya there is a big difference between the CL72 and CL77 bikes. Around 1995 I restored one of each of them and would ride then twice a day to break them in. The CL72 had 15--40 gears and the CL77 had the 15--37 gears as stock. I could for sure tell the difference in all gears. As for "Xing" 2nd and 3rd gears it makes the trans rather than a "wide ratio" a "close ratio" which if anything helps the clutch. I rather doubt it helps much but for sure doesn't damage the gears or any other parts. ............lm

(This thread is a few months old, but I thought I'd chime in anyway...)

I am doing this also, that is, trying to gear my CL77 like a CB77, since my CL won't be going off road anymore.

In doing the math, accounting for the larger 19" rear tire, and using a stock 15T front sprocket, I compute that either a 31 or 32 tooth rear would give response and gearing pretty close to the CB. This should get the CL to within 1 mph of the CB at 60mph, with the same RPM.

As a matter of fact, I just spoke to Rebel gears today about getting their 126A-32 sprocket, $55.55 plus shipping.

I've just saw some on Ebay for a whole lot less than that. I believe even a CB77 sprocket will bolt on.

Thanks, I'll give it a look. BTW, the 126A *is* for the CB77. Same for Sprocket Specialists -- their's is the model 126, too, but $62.99.
