looks like a great forum and i'm now proud to be a 305 owner.

i live in San Antonio Texas and have mostly ridden vintage european bikes, this is my first endeavor into japan.

i have a few general questions about these bikes, first of all what is the top speed i can expect for a stock bike of this year.

i've read the posts about increasing speed and the addition of the electronic ignition appeals to me more than anything else, it worked great on a mid '70's bmw i had. what about carbs? seems some of the older posts i've seen suggested amal carbs or cb450 carbs, are these still good suggestions or has any one come up with something better since that thread was posted two and a half years ago? where would i find those parts (are there #'s for them that'd make the search easier). any brand of electronic ignition better than the others? i don't want to dive into the engine to increase power, just the few simple modifications that some have suggested sound good to me.

i'm sure i'll have more questions soon, right now i'm dealing with a sputtering issue when the bike hits 60mph, when it sputters the bike pretty much loses power and dies, after re-starting it some of the power returns but lately the return only lasts a few miles, even at slower speeds it dies now. i changed the plugs but that didn't seem to help. i'm thinking it's the carbs.

okay, any help is greatly appreciated!

thanks,
Lloyd

I'm a traditionalist, the original carbs and ignition system worked great back in the 60s and with proper maintenance they still do. Disassemble the carbs, clean every part, reassemble with new gaskets and they will last another 20 years. Clean and rebuild the petcock before reinstalling your carbs. Change the points and condenser, tune using lm's simple guide and you are good to go.
