Here are some better photos - both sides and a top view. I realize it's NOT a gear tooth. If it was, it would be thicker at the base. It looks familiar, but I just can't place it. Any ideas?

That's a good teaser you've posted there seadog, my guess is it could be a tang off the edge of a clutch plate or a tab from a locking washer but it looks like it's been machined.

Good guesses, Geoff, but it’s too narrow and thin for a clutch plate tang and too thick for a locking tab. It appears to be machined steel.
