Oil leaks
Oil LeaksThat brass tube looks very long to me, long enough to stop the cylinder seating properly.
I quite like the idea, although Honda never thought it necessary, it may be another solution in search of a problem. I'd like it even better with an O ring round the tube like the ones Honda deem necessary on the cylinder head oilways (front outer studs) but would certainly shorten that tube off some if I didn't discard it altogether. You say that you get oil leaking as soon as you slacken the head nuts, is that all around the base gasket or just in the area of the ninth hole / bass tube.

I did wonder about the length of the tube when I took the photo but I will check tomorrow. What is normally there as I did not realise it was not standard? When I released the torque on the studs it did seem to leak out the back of cylinder as well though when I ran it the obvious problem was definitely at the front of the engine though of course it does slope forward. Who ever put that part there had a idea HONDA never used as I know it.
I'd remove it as it could impede the oil flow. ....................lm
Oil leaksThere is normally NOTHING where your engine has that brass tube. just two holes, one each in the upper crankcase and the cylinder with the cylinder base gasket sealing the 'oil passage' between the two parts.
Once you actually LIFT the cylinder you will get oil everywhere as all four corner stud holes will have (quite a bit) of oil in them, once the gasket seal at the base of the cylinder is broken this oil will spill out but this shouldn't happen until you actually separate the two items. These castings are pretty robust but it's just possible that either the crankcase or cylinder joint face is distorted causing the leak; in that case the brass tube may have been put in by a previous owner to attempt a cure. If so it clearly didn't work! Suggest that you check out the two joint faces for flatness.
