Fender brace hits the header pipes

Post by rider5 » Sun Jul 16, 2017 8:23 am

I'm trying to reinstall the header pipes on my '67 CA77 Dream and am having a problem. No matter how I try to attach them I can't seem to get enough clearance for the chrome brace near the bottom of the front fender. Maybe I didn't pay enough attention when I took them off. I've tried everything I can think of here, is there a trick to it?

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not quite understanding this post, are you saying the chrome fender brace is catching the header pipes when you turn the steering or you cannot mount the headers because the brace is in the way.

Fender brace hits the header pipes

I can't seem to get them mounted without the brace hitting the pipes when turning the fork. The best I can do is have them at an angle so the brace barely hits the pipes when turning, but then if I take the bike down from the center-stand the problem is worse - can't ride the bike that way, can barely steer at all.

Maybe where they bolt into the cylinder head has to be at an angle instead of flush? Seems like they were flush against the head when I removed them. I've tried about everything I can think of.

Are you sure you have the right one on the right side and the left one on the left side. They look the same but are not.

So,here are my thoughts. If you are replacing the header pipes you took off and everything was ok then it should fit back now. The flange on the headers needs to seat properly on the copper washer. This might seem a dumb question but are you fitting the correct header to the correct side. On my 77 there is about 1/2" between the header and the brace.
What I can't understand is if it was ok before you took things apart things should fit back now.
Have you put a different design brace on??

OMG ... I'm an idiot. I guess I was trying to put the left pipe onto the right side, they look absolutely identical to me. Thanks for the help casamere & ggarton, all is well now.
