Just wondering why. I saw somewhere to allow four minutes for the engine to warmup before riding and I've seen that they do need some time on utube. When I started mine a few days ago to freshen up the battery it was pretty cold (4c !). It was at least ten minutes before she would run clean with the choke fully open.
Hence my question. Could it be down to the carb insulators or what.

Warming upRe: Warming upDid you ride it? If not - don't start it up. If you feel the battery is low, charge it. Starting an engine contaminates the oil, and it takes time running at operating temp to burn off the contaminants that were deposited. Starting and running for short periods only adds unburned gas and acids to the oil. Best thing to do before storing is to change the oil and filter, then run the engine for 30 seconds to circulate the fresh oil, then don't start it again until you are ready to ride. The fresh oil will protect the internals from corrosion while sitting. Synthetic oils have advantages during storage, so use them if you can. It's the oil temp that's the issue. It needs to get up to operating temp (212F) and sit there for a while in order to burn-off condensation and get rid of the unburned fuel that has accumulated from the start-up. The longer the choke is on the more unburned fuel will be in the oil. Kicking (or cranking) the engine over during the storage is a better idea, and will circulate the clean oil without the added contaminants from actual running. I've done this, with the valve cover off, on one my bikes that was being stored and was surprised at the amount of oil that was circulated to the top end just from turning over using the kickstarter. Take out the plugs just pop it into high gear and push it up and down your drive way the neighbours will think you are mad and only if you are a fit person we do not want to loose any of our customer with heart attacks.
I suppose one could take out the plugs and press the starter to turn over the engine then give the battery a good charge you would be doing two good things there, do put the plugs back in. Me I just turn over the engine during storage using the kickstarter. A recent article about engine warm-up in cold temps -
