Primary Chain Wear
From start to finish HONDA used 9 different designs of the clutch and in late 65 early 66 The CUSH DRIVE was issued and even it had a design change to improve it.
The best setup uses at least the Steel Plates, Friction Plates, Center Hub, Pressure Plates and Springs with White Paint on One End. Using the early friction disc made of Plastic is a mistake as they were/are not able to handle the HP over time. (they are still being sold on eBay every day as OEM) Those were discontinued when the Cush Drive was issued. .................lm.
Thanks for the information LM and the steer on the best clutch arrangement. I guess that 4 plate clutch was really early one.
It seems I need to get 2 new 'thin' steel plates to replace the two extra thick plates in my pack as I understand that I should have 5 thin ones and 1 thick one for the 6 plate set up. The fibre friction plates are all 2.91 to 2.95 mm thick so seem to be within tolerance. They are the type without the metal plate, as these are fibre through the whole thickness. The clutch was not slipping before I tore it down. Are these OK to use again as you mention that the friction disc made of 'plastic' is not recommended? The 4 disc was number 2. (I think)
These are my opinions. Use all the parts of the cush drive other than the outer basket. These parts were designed later than the ones you have and were to improve the previous issues with slipping. Consider this. Why would your clutch not actually have all the correct parts for it's issue rather than a mix? The spring numbers aren't obvious at this time after several changes then superseded issues came along. What I do know is that the springs with one white end work. I have all the parts needed. ........................lm
