Primary Chain Wear

Post by mcconnellfrance » Wed Feb 01, 2017 5:49 am

Hi,

I finally have got back to working on my CB77 after a lengthy house move which has killed my workshop time.

I recently noticed that I have a clicking noise from the left cover area. I previously thought the noise was valve clearances not set correctly and making the usually clicking at low RPM but on closer inspection, it is coming from the left side cover. As I have a small oil leak from the bottom of the cover, I decided to take off the cover and strip down the primary drive. I noticed some marks on the inside of the cover around the clutch but not in the area of the primary chain itself. The primary chain itself may be worn but I have no real means of measuring it. See the photo of the lateral deflection of the chain.

Any advice appreciated on whether this chain needs replaced and where I might be able to get a new one.

Regards,
Gordon

Its been so long since I was on the forum that I have messed up the photo insertion! Apologies!

I hope this is it this time.

Hi Gordon,
Sprockets Unlimited are doing primary chains, not sure of their address but you can google them. Their prices are good.
Regards Al.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the reply. I will get in touch with them as I found the website.
What did you think about the condition of the existing chain? It has 2.5 cm transverse deflection when lying like the picture. It seemed a bit much to me.

Gordon

Hi Gordon,
Not sure about the wear but for the price and peace of mind fit a new one, I bought 6 @ £18.00 each from Sprockets Unlimited.
Cheers Al.

HiAlan,

I spoke to Sprockets Unlimited this morning and indeed the price is very reasonable. They are out of stock at the moment but are expecting a delivery in the next week or so. I will change the chain as you are recommending. Hopefully it will get rid of the clicking noise!

Thanks again for your advice.

Regards,

Gordon

I had a clicking from that case when the clutch was pulled in, it was the clutch center touching the cover were the oil feed is.
