Tim.........thanks for the detailed paint code. I'll give it a try.........

Regarding the seat pans...........I've never seen an original blue pan on any of these twin models. I suspect there may have been a few on the earliest models but will likely go with black on the blue frame. I am also doing another '63 in its original red with a red pan. I have a red '64 that came to me as a running bike and appeared to be in original condition from the 1st owner. It has a red seat pan.

I am sending things to my painter in a few weeks.............but won't actually begin the restoration until 2018.

Your quite welcome OldSrambler. I'm glad you came to your decision on pan color. I guess not many have seen blue bikes much less what color the pans were. I support the fact that Honda realized the rear seat brackets are so visible and thats why they color matched the all painted steel parts including the pan. I'm working on my 10th CL right now. The best of luck on all your scrambler builds.

My 2 cents for what it's worth, in 20 plus years and some 70+ CL's that have rolled in and out of my garage, black pans were common, red pans were rare, one and only one blue pan came and went. With viewing that many bikes/seats you can make a pretty damn good judgement call on what is original paint or not. I would have to say this one seat with a blue pan was painted at the factory.

The questions which answer all my doubts as to original or repaint is to look at the fasteners which hold the chrome/stainless trim.
Look at the number of broken/missing tabs is another.
As for the fabric if I see stitching I pretty much figure HONDA didn't make the cover...................lm

Both the blue seats I've restored were early buckle type with chrome plated steel trim. They had factory covers with factory hardware attached trim with early spikes. In my 25 years of working on these old bikes. I know quiet well what is or isn't repainted. The bottom line is they did as sixtiescycle has confirmed. Thank you. Ed get over it.

CL seat base colours..

Post by DJM » Fri Jan 20, 2017 6:00 pm

C'mon guys this isn't a pi**ing contest.

Does it really matter what colour the UNDERSIDE of the seat was?

You can't even SEE it when you're RIDING the bike which is what they were built for.

I know form my years as Eligibility Officer in Classic racing that it's impossible to prove beyond doubt that something NEVER happened, improbable yes but never, who really knows?

It may not matter to you.
However when I did a RESTORATION I made sure ALL THINGS were as original because that is what the owner expected..
That's why I use any information I can acquire to reach that objective and I've been doing complete restorations of the CB/CL72/77 bikes since 1994. (I just delivered my last 2 complete bike restorations and will rebuild engines and heads from now on)
There are a lot of myths about how these bikes were over the years and too many "have to some become fact".
A side statement will be remembered over time whether fact or fiction and when I see one which I disagree with I say so.
Some come to me with good questions as to how or what with these bikes and I share my knowledge or skills in a effort to help.
I just delivered a BLUE 1962 CB77 and I had the seat covered in BLACK and the owner wondered why it wasn't BLUE.
Answer is "Not all were BLUE".
The CLUTCH is a good example also. RIGHT!. ...............lm
