Yellow and White Cap Nuts

Post by ramwing7 » Fri Nov 04, 2016 2:27 pm

I'm in the process of removing the head from my Scrambler engine. While perusing my Clymer Manual I noticed the following sentence: "Use white cap nuts for studs 1-4 and yellow cap nuts for studs 5-8". : /
What's that all about?
Mine all look the same color.
This gonna be significant?
Thanks.

Ignore that. (What year is your Clymer?)
That was for the EARLY ISSUE ENGINES and was dropped for most of the engine production.
Watch out for the COPPER washers also.
HONDA ZINC plated them after the first issues also.
My 1965 CL77 parts book shows 2 different washers (4&4) without a description or location or material.
I've had engines (before 1967) that had all ZINC plated COPPER washers then around 1967 I find 4 ZINC plated copper and 4 ZINC STEEL washers.
The COPPERS were at the 4 outside corners and the other 4 were in the middle with a standard nut rather than a CAP NUT.
I find in my 1968 CB77 parts book that at CB77-1005895 the 4&4 washers were used.
I've never seen a engine number where this change was made for the CL77.
Also the 2 nuts/washers at the FRONT/MIDDLE of the lower case at first issue were cap nuts/copper washers and at the time of the washers and nut changes so did those 2.................lm

Yellow and White Cap nuts

You had me at the first sentence. : )
I beginning to think they assembled these things out of what parts might have been available in the box that day. It's sure not a clear path.

While I'm at it, I have a related question. To remove the rocker arms shafts . a "special" tool seems to be required. Does this "special" tool have another name in the real world?
Thanks.

i keep things simple.
When you look into the area of the cam sprocket you can see the end of the rocker shafts.
I use a long (10/12 inch) punch and drive them out as much as I can.
You will now see the big end and there is a slot I put the punch into and pry the shaft from the head.
Keep in mind the exhaust shafts has a smaller little end that the intake shafts.
Simple to identify by looking at the size of the hole in the middle of the shafts.
BIG hole, BIG end and SMALL hole, SMALL end.
And I can use the punch for other jobs also.. ............................lm

Yellow and White Cap nuts

I ended up using a deep well socket, a 6mm bolt and a few washers.

I created a strange sorta puller by putting the socket over the end of the rocker arm, putting the bolt thru the socket, and screwing the bolt into the end of the rocker shaft. Tightend down the bolt to pull on the shaft. Added washers progressively and it pulled it right out.

Wish I could take credit, but I modeled it after a Harley specific puller I had laying around. Of course the HD puller wouldn't work on a Honda.
