cb72 steering stem

Post by hondaly » Tue Sep 13, 2016 4:07 am

I have come across a problem with a bottom steering stem, the hole centres for the fork tubes seem to be approx. 4mm wider than the top yoke. This results in the forks splaying out and are too wide for the axle. 1965 bike with steel sliders. Any comments? Anybody got stem they can measure for me? Thanks

There are, at least, three different sets of yokes.

The two used on steel lowers are 38mm tubes, second 35 mm tubes. Early (38mm) centre distance is 168mm. Later (35mm tubes) also 168mm.

The last version (alloy lowers) had smaller tubes again (33mm) but still a spacing of 168mm.

Maybe you have an oddball set of forks? Maybe from a CL?

Send some measurements and pictures. It will help us help you.

The fork tube dia at btm. yoke position is 34.6mm On dismantling top and yokes, I measure top yoke centres at 167mm (exactly same on an other top yoke I have) and bottom yoke at 170mm centres.
I cant remember how the axle position in the wheel and forks was when I dismantled it over a year ago.

If it is a genuine CB72 bottom yoke it may have received a whack.

CL72 yokes are 172mm

Pictures always help.......

On re-measuring bottom yoke I can get a dimension of 171 centres. However I measured the offset from the centre of the stem to fork centres (inline) at approx. 48mm The offset for the top yoke is approx. 52mm, does this shed any more light on the problem. The centre hole down the middle of the stem is 13.4mm The btm yoke shows no sign of being wacked or damaged

You may have a top yoke for the later, alloy bottom, forks. They have a different offset, I think.

Again, photos would help. Much better than guesswork.
