I made a chance discovery recently. I sold one of my Dream 'projects' to a friend who wanted something to occupy his evenings. It turns out that he used to own a brake-relining company. They sold all the machinery but keep a close relationship with the new owners. I dropped off three sets and they came back with nice thick linings fitted. The company do overspeed brakes for wind turbines so the quality of their work is high. Prices are a pleasant surprise, too.

The gold finish is their standard practice and although I don't like it, wil never be seen when the brakes are assembled.

The plan is to assemble the brake-plate with shoes and the skim the hubs and the drums to get maximum coverage of shoes and drum.

I also have an early DLS brake plate which I will do at the same time, just in case.....

I have left this one assembled for the time being so that I have a pattern to follow for re-assembly.

I posted details elsewhere but I was very pleased with my latest camchain tensioner mod using Kawasaki DOHC idler sprockets. These are steel sprockets with rubber cusioning both on the hub and alongside the sprocket teeth. A very high quality part which can be picked up for $20 on eBay. It requires a new needle bearing and a couple of shims to make it fit in place of the 'small' Honda tensioner.

The rubber cushions should make this run nice and quietly.

Sometimes I surprise even myself at the things I have to do to solve little problems on this project. When I was taking apart the speedo drive a little thrust washer got caught and mangled. That will be OK, I thought, I'll just go on line and order a replacement. After all it's only a washer. After searching for a while I remembered that Honda never made anything a standard size if they could avoid it so my luck was out.

The washer fits over the speedo drive shaft and prevents the skew gear from chewing up the casing of the unit. The washer was 1/2 mm thick, 9mm id and 12mm od. The closest I could get was 15mm od. I bought a quantity of those washers then set about making a little tool to help me reduce the diameter.

With the big washers stacked onto my little tool it was easy enough to turn them to the required size.

Once they were the correct OD they could be taken out of the fixture.

Having modified 10 washers, I only needed one so I have a few spares. That's got to be the most expensive small washer ever, even by Honda standards....

With the speedo drive problem sorted I wanted to do a dry run of my hubs and brake plates. I wasn't certain that I had all the right linkage parts and springs etc.

The front hub got a pair of NOS brake shoes and they were a nice close fit to the drum.

I was expecting to have to skim the shoes but they looked perfect and the drum surface is pretty nice, too.

The rear brake got a set of the shoes I recently had re-lined and they were slightly larger than the drum. The rear drum is not as nice as the front so I am going to skim both and get them matching up nicely.

The linkages got a fresh set of stainless steel rivets to finish them off. I need to get some bearings and get the rear drum and shoes skimmed. With that done, everything will come apart again for a final polish and I'll be able to start wheel building.
