CB77 Late Model Fork differences

Post by rpr851r » Sat Apr 23, 2011 12:44 pm

I am putting fork seals in my brothers 66 CB77. I have another set of late model forks (aluminum sliders) off of a 65 CB77. I was planning on using the best parts from each to get a good set together. Both sets of forks are now disassembled and I am finding differences. The forks from the 66 CB have a tube with an aluminum fitting on the bottom that rises up from the bottom of the forks that the 65 forks don’t have. The 65 forks only have the aluminum fitting and no steel tube. Also the bottom of the fork tubes on the 65 has a larger diameter opening than the ones on the 66. I was never aware of that there were differences in the late model fork assemblies. Can someone confirm that there are differences and that the earlier forks are not suppose to have the steel rod inserted in the aluminum fitting?

Thanks,
Rich
