7 ft lb Oil Pump Torque

Post by Seadog » Tue Apr 26, 2016 4:03 pm

I'm re-installing my cleaned up oil pump and tightening the six 6mm bolts in a bit at a time in a cross wise pattern. It seems tight, but I haven't even gotten to 5 ft. lbs. yet. Is 7 really ok? I wouldn't want to strip these threads. Advice please!

Trust your instincts. At 4/5 Foot pounds they aren't going to fall out.

When I don't trust my instincts, the next thing that happens is SNAP!

Thanks, Jensey. The screws went in dry. From what I've read, I believe that wet torque would be 20% lower. I think I'm set with the screws. I'll check the torque again after I run it for a bit.

My problem now is that I cannot get the port cover back onto the oil filter shaft - I removed and cleaned the filter without taking the engine side cover off. After reinstalling the filter (a bit of a tricky proceedure getting the chain back on the sprocket), I find that the shaft is so loose and sloppy that the weight of the chain pulls the filter out of alignment so it won't align with the socket in the port cover. The shaft pin alignment is correct at 12 o'clock. I'll keep fiddling with it until I get it on. I don't really want to take off the whole side cover and don't see how that would help anyway. If someone has a suggestion, I'd appreciate hearing it.

You will have the same problem if you take the side cover off - standard problem with this engine.

I try to angle the cover (in at the top) as much as possible when installing it (but that isn't much!) and tap the bottom of the cover with a rubber hammer. It will usually pop into place.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't file a slight bevel on the bottom half of the pocket that accepts the filter shaft to make it easier to get the shaft into place.
