Help for a Newb

Post by tx63conv » Fri Jan 22, 2016 9:34 pm

I am going to look at some bikes over the weekend and don't know much about them, I have always loved the way these look but have not had a chance to do a lot of research before I get there (I've got a day to learn as much as possible)

I have attached a few of the pics--he has 5 listed for sale in various working conditions. 1965 Superhawk, 1966 Superhawk, 1964 Superhawk Cp77 and a 1963 Superhawk Cp 77.

What are some things I should look for? They are in various conditions to not running to running. Is there somewhere I can look for Vin or serial numbers to tell which is which?

Any advice or help will be appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum. Ideally, I would go for something that is near complete and has an engine that turns over. These engines are notorious for piston seizure is left standing for long periods and it can ne quite time-consuming to free them up.

Honda's engine and frame numbering was pretty confusing but does have some logic to it. Everything up to '63 has the first digit of engine and frame number as the year. From '64 there is just a long number sequence to end of production, with more digits but starting with a '1'.

Some people mistake '64 models as rare '61 bikes for that reason.

Your top picture looks the most original bike and the bottom is a CL72/77 scrambler.

Here is a chart for CB72 / 77...

If those are the bikes, the seller does not know what he has.................The top bike is most complete with low-bars and has what may have been a blue seat from a '65 model ...........the 2nd pic includes parts from a '67 CB77............and the last pic could be any-year Scrambler with mixed parts...........The seat is a CL72 unit. The lower left at the front of the cylinder has a motor-size casting...............but beware..........many changes and mixed-parts exist. Good Hunting.

Thanks for the replies and for the list of serial numbers. I will take that with me when I go look tomorrow. I only posted pics of the ones that looked the most complete.

Definite must have on one that at least the motor turns over. What do you think the value of the above bikes are? Looks like I could find a nice running complete bike for $2500?
