Getting your motor "unstuck"

Post by conbs » Wed Oct 07, 2015 12:44 pm

Have you tried getting the motor loose? With that low of mileage, the internals should be new. If it was in a basement, the cylinders may be alright even though it seems stuck.

Make sure the transmission is not in "two gears". I got a Dream with the tranny locked up and I thought I would have to drop the motor. Once I got it into neutral everything was fine.

If the cylinders are "stuck" you can try putting it in 4th gear and rocking it back and forth while you sit on it.

If that doesn't get it, try taking the spark plugs out and putting a mix of 50% ATF and 50% acetone in the cylinders (it works even better than Kroil) and let it sit a few days. WATCH OUT! When you try breaking it loose, if it lets go, all that liquid will come out of the spark plug holes and paint your garage. Put rags over the holes to keep it from going everywhere.

You can also remove the dyno windings off of the right side of the motor and put a chain wrench or rubber strap wrench on the rotor. Try moving it back and forth a little at a time to see if you can break it loose.

Some people would urge you to just drop the motor and take it apart to see what you have. But, I submit that if you can break the motor loose and get it started, and then ride it, that will tell you a lot more and a lot faster. If it smokes you will need to tear down the motor. Nothing really lost but, a little time and effort on your part. But, if it runs well - which it likely will with that low of mileage - you will have saved yourself a lot of time and money. Either way, you will have the same effort getting carbs, tank, etc. sorted out.

A contrarian suggestion from someone who has had it work out...

Just a word from a chemist. Acetone is a wonderful solvent but also a terrible fire hazard. Don't use it in the basement, assuming the bike is still there. This is an outdoor or garage procedure.
