Camshaft removal help!
Camshaft removal help!Hi guys my name is Bryan from Oakland, I recently purchased a 66 cb77 and tore the engine apart to redo the cylinders and decided to redo the whole top end as the valves were rusted.
Let's get down to what's going on, I got the main cam lock nut off and took off the 6mm bolt on the side, I tapped out the left side and the bearing came out, I went to tap the other side and the bearing are all coming out together. I've searched on here and saw a couple threads but am still at a lost, can someone break down on how to get this guy out? Thank you! Bryan [/b] camshaft removalThe advance unit is on splines the same as the side you got out, Put the 14mm nut back on loose a thread or two short of tight and hit the end of the thread with a mallet/ copper hammer. When it is loose you will be able to drive the cam out and leave the advance unit behind, that lifts out once the cam is out.
Good luck with it. Al.
Camshaft removalAl,
Thank you so much, I tapped everything back in place but I can't seem to get the side I got out line up properly to mate up. Is there a trick to getting them align? Thanks in advance. Bryan I think you are trying to get the cam half that you took off back on? If so it has splines and you need to line them up. There is one particular spline that has to line up with another spline. If you spin the side you have loose you should be able to see the one spline that looks different. Be easier to explain if I had a picture.
camshaft removalSorry I misunderstood you Bryan, to reassemble make sure the punch mark on the advance unit sprocket is at the top, it must be there or timing will be out. You can see the splines have a gap that mates them together, The next thing is the points shaft has a line on the points end and that has to point up cos the other end of locates into a slot in the advance unit. Be very careful as you tap them together and make sure the punch mark is at the top also the line on the points shaft is up and they will go together. Have a look before you start at the inside of the advance unit and you will see the slot the points shaft locates into and will understand more.
