thanks loudmouse, I appreciate your advice. I have a whole bunch of hard maple scraps left over from making flintlock rifles that will do nicely for reinstalling things. As far as the head, the rust is not bad at all. The side with the valves closed was nice and clean. Timing chain and follower look good. The other side cleaned up nicely with a brass bristle brush. The bike was locked up, but a couple of weeks of soaking with PB Blaster and a litte automatic trans fluid did the trick. ( now I need to get the other engine loose.) Every thing looks pretty good actually, except I broke the top ring on the stuck piston. I got the others loose after soaking an additional week, but that one broke ( and I wasn't even trying !) Just need to track down a set of standard rings. Bores measure pretty near standard ( with vernier calipers-all I have to measure with.) Next item is to bag and label a bunch of stuff, then sandblast the frame and have the neighbor fix a couple of welds. After that its respoke the wheels, and make a roller, then electrics and finally engine. I think I have things pretty much in the right order. I used Jim's milkstone remover method and the tank cleaned up pretty well. I like that. Its not dangerous, and the tank doesnt rust after you're done. Plus you just filter the stuff and save it for next time.
Did you buy the other two that were for sale ? If so, the one looked pretty good to me. Was that the case ?
Thanks again,
