Modelman

Yes, those are the guys. Superb work and lovely to deal with. Won't be back up there until October but I'll definitely be in touch!

LOUD MOUSE MAKES A GOOD POINT ABOUT GROOVES AND EDGES IN A COMBUSTION CHAMBER BEING USED BY ENGINE MANUFACTURES. BUT AS I WAS GAINING FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ENGINES; I ALSO WAS EXPOSED TO THE CONCEPT THAT EDGES AND PINPOINTS IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER COULD CAUSE PRE-IGNITION (THE PIED PIPER EFFECT).

SEARCH THE INTERNET FOR "GROOVED COMBUSTION CHAMBERS" AND YOU'LL SEE EXAMPLES OF ADDING GROOVES AND EDGES AND READ VARIOUS LEVELS OF THE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING AS TO WHY IT WORKS AND ITS ADVANTAGES.

DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE MAKING JUDGEMENTS. THESE INDIVIDUALS HAVE SPENT LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY AND TIME ON THESE ENGINES.

THE GROOVES ARE TO DIRECT THE IGNITION OF THE FUEL/AIR MIXTURE OUT INTO THE SQUISH AREA AT THE EDGES OF THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER A MOMENT SOONER THAN NORMAL TO INCREASE THE EFFICIENCY OF THE COMBUSTION PROCESS. WHEN THE RESEARCH IS DONE THERE WILL BE MUCH INFORMATION PRESENTED TO ADD TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROCESS.

A SIMPLE EXAMPLE OF THE RESULTS OF THE PROCESS IS THAT MY BROTHER REBUILDS ENGINES FOR A PROFESSIONAL MOTORCROSSER FRIEND. HE HAS NUMEROUS MOTORCROSSERS OF THE SAME MODEL IN HIS RACING STABLE AND THE ENGINES WITH THE GROOVED COMBUSTION CHAMBERS RUN NOTICEABLY STRONGER THAN THE OTHER NON-MODIFIED ENGINES. OTHERWISE THE ENGINES ARE AS THEY COME FROM THE MANUFACTURER.

Always interesting to see people experimenting. Quite often it is the psychological benefit of the work that has the biggest effect. The dyno tests I have found seem to change more than one variable at a time which is not necessarily good engineering.

Also my knowledge of Engineering and Thermodynamics makes me uneasy with the concept that you can get a flame front to travel down a narrow channel faster than it does in a more spherical open combustion space.

Most of the stuff I have seen on the internet seems to be several years old. This one is quite interesting and done with a decent engineering method.

Just saying "my modified engine runs stronger" is not necessarily 'results' or 'proof' in the real engineering world. You have to look at the likes of Mr Kooistra to see what real-world results look like in this field......

Maybe it would be interesting to compare a rusty, pitted 305 head (I have plenty of those) with a smooth one on the dyno?

Please use the caps-lock key. Uppercase posts are considered to be shouting..... :-)
