Thanks, G. I can't get it here, but knowing what it's designed to do - clean carbs and machine parts - helps. I settled on this stuff, which is billed as doing essentially the same thing:

This afternoon, I've been fiddling with the bridge plate, trying to understand how the damper ring works when it's located under the stem nut, but on top of the bridge plate. It just spins freely. Can you explain it's function? Is there an order to tightening the stem nut and the two bridge bolts? What came first, the chicken or the egg….

Mine is a pressed-bar bike so the top plate will be different.

What an idiot I am. The damper ring must merely provide the vertical core for the stacked steering damper washers. It doesn't need to be tight, just keep those washers and parts together in a neat stack.

Life's little trials and tribulations.

When I was cleaning the floor in my shop last night, I found an end cap to something. It wasn't until later that it dawned upon me what it was - one of the 4 caps covering the front suspension arm bushings. It must have fallen off when I was mounting the front shocks in the fork yesterday. I just never noticed it was gone. So, off the front fork came and the suspension after.

It was a good thing too. Shame on me for not checking those bushings, collars and seals before assembly. They really need replacing. One sleeve was pretty rusted and the other was actually worn in such a way that it was fitting into the groove in the center of the bushing.

Fortunately, Ohio Cycle has the parts and I ordered them today with a bunch of other things. Now I'll have to wait for awhile to pick back up on assembly, but there's plenty to do in the mean time. Besides, I'll need time to figure out how to remove and replace those fiber bushings….

You just have to chuckle.

Necessity is the mother of invention, but now that I have them out (undamaged), how do I get the new ones back in? I'll have to think on it.

Nice solution. They are quite tricky to remove in one piece and I don't think that those fibre bushes do any favours to the handling. I am going to make some bronze bushes for mine and I did enjoy making this little tool to get them out intact.....

The important thing is to support the bush as it goes in or out, otherwise it is going to collapse.
