Main bearing knock pin pushed into upper case

Post by Tim Allman » Sat Jul 18, 2015 2:09 pm

Here is a confession that I really don't want to make but here goes.

Many years ago while assembling my engine cases, I wasn't careful about aligning the pin and the race for the right side main bearing. The result is that the pin was pushed into the upper case and opened a small crack. When I discovered this at the time I found that the pin still protruded a few mm, enough to keep the race from rotating (but not enough for me to grab it with a plier), so I just aligned the bearing race and reassembled the engine.

It has worked like this for a very long time but it bugs me and I would like to extract the pin, repair the crack and reset the pin properly. Does anyone have experience with this type of repair?

Many years back when I just started restorations I did the same thing and found it before I had other parts installed.
I split the cases, removed the chip, pushed the pin out, cleaned the case with acetone , JB Weld the chip onto the case, and put the cases together.
HAVEN'T DONE THAT AGAIN. .....................lm

What do you mean by "the chip"?

Simple enough.
As the locator knock pin is pushed by the outer race of the bearing it will push a piece of aluminum out of the case.
I choose to call that thing a CHIP. ...........lm
