I could not find another post pertaining to this issue. The battery seems need refilling more than usual. I decided to check charging voltage with my DMM at the battery set on DC. At rest the voltage reads around 12V. Start the engine and the meter goes blank. Tried another meter, same thing. Bike had radio shack rectifier from previous owner. I replaced with a new selenium replica from Ebay, same thing. Meter reads when engine off, goes blank when started.
Same meters on my other 65 dream they read just fine when engine off or on. I am stumped.
One of a kind charging problem, seriously.
Also, Try checking the rectifier output on both DC and AC settings on your meter. A shorted or incorrectly wired rectifier can mean AC output where DC should be. This can boil your battery electrolyte, create a constant draw on the battery, and will never be indicated by a DMM on the DC volts setting. It is also possible you got two bad rectifiers in a row. Good Luck.
Used an analog meterAfter trying 2 digital meters and 2 different rectifiers i used an analog meter. It reads properly and the bike is charging just fine. I still don't know why the digital works on one of my 65 dreams and not on the other 65 dream, and that is after swapping rectifiers between the two bikes.
At this point, since it charges I'm tempted to leave it alone.
