The Correct Color of Blue

Post by carabener » Fri Feb 13, 2015 7:24 am

Why do so many people put the incorrect color of blue on their Honda seat recovers?
See the correct blue as dictated and made OEM by Honda (the U color).

You've partly answered your own question by taking two pictures in different light and making the two seats look like they are a different color......!

I have a NOS CB160 seat which is similar to your second pic but I have seen genuine Honda brochures showing a much brighter blue. Also it seems that Honda used slightly different colors and vinyl grades over the years.

Hi G-Man thanks for getting back. The blue I see on ebay recovers and many CB77's for sale even by Bill Silver who knows better...is the gaudy bright blue used later by Honda on motocrossers and scramblers after the 250 Elsnore. And the USA VFR1000R gorgeous Honda. The original blue is really just too hard and expensive to make-its a smooth thick cover and the light cloud blue difficult to copy. My friend has his original, (he bought new) in 1965 blue CB77 Honda with the original light blue seat in the pics above. Everyone (all the geniuses) keeps telling him he has the wrong color seat on his Honda. The gaudy bright blue is what they say dealers swear by. Of course, these are all 25 year olds.
The difference is we bought these bikes in our teens brand spanking new so we know better. It, to me, is like putting a purple seat on a priceless, classic, Vincent Black Lightening. 'Tres Gauche' as the French might say, and I probably misspelled :). Just think people should know the real deal color... then if they choose gaudy blue for a seat... so be it. Like a red seat on a CB77, they need to know there were none. But, that is a matter of personal choice later on. But please...don't try and pass it off as original stock. Just an over 21-year old guys 2-cents.
cheers

As you'll notice this is the soft soft subtle blue of OEM blue seats not a bright bright sky blue seen on some CB77/72's. One can argue shades of grey if you like. But there is no missing the difference between the bright gaudy sky blue and the soft soft Honda OEM blue.

This seat is the later bright bright sky blue incorrect for 1960's CB77/72's. The only bikes I've ever seen this on back then were maybe Super Cub 50's.

Couple of questions.
Is the welt plastic or fabric covered?
Is this a recovered or OEM seat?. ..........lm

seat blue

Wish I had a color pic of my bike from back in the day but I don't.

Best I can remember the blue was somewhere between the light blue in first pic and gaudy blue Canadian repop that's on it now. It's toning down a bit as it ages. As I recall it had a more bronz-ish tone to the Honda logo on back.

Original seat cover didn't last long, ripped out at front where pan pushes on it (as shown in second pic above). Subsequent re-cover blew out in same places. I ground the sharp corners off front of the seat pan when I installed the gaudy blue cover.

My bike originally had buckles on the strap, didn't get put back on when seat was re-covered in black back then. Wish I could find it.
