Speedo drive confusion...

Post by R100 » Mon Feb 09, 2015 3:01 pm

I have the "both clockwise" tach/speedo unit. While servicing it, I noticed that the tach and speedo cables turn in opposite directions to each other. When hooked up the speedo is activated when the front wheel is spinning in reverse !!!

I can't rely on frame # because this bike is a mongrel. No way to determine which bike various parts came from.

I see speedo drive units on E-bay, but they only reference year. Is there a way to determine which drive unit to go after? Don't want to spend money on another one that is wrong.

Might be easier to look for an early speedo. Not sure when yours came in but the earlier ones are probably more plentiful.

If your casing is good you could get a rough one and just use the innards and face.

Well that's a possibility, but I just went through the process of curing the tach of its insanity.
Did a lot of searching and reading here, I got the cup and magnets clean, cleaned and lightly lubed all the other moving parts.
I just tested it and it worked.

You can swap out the speedo mechanism separately.

You mean get a used one with a counter clockwise speedo and put that speedo mechanism (and faceplate) in mine to match the drive that I have?
I could, but no way of knowing whether a used one works or not. E-bay can be a lottery when buying instruments, and speedos seem to be much more expensive than drive units.
Is there no way to determine if a drive unit is for CW or CCW? Mine (picture) has "5- 6" stamped on it.

Do you know which of the two speedometers is the early version, which is the later version?
Possibly what year they changed?
