1964 cl72 project
1964 cl72 projecthi
I was tinkering with my CL72 project. It is a 64 I believe, SLS front and rear, as well as high beam indicator in the speedo face. The bike was originally blue, but in the past someone has painted the frame black; and the tank , headlight bucket , top fork shrouds a bright lime green which is rather unfortunate. Still deciding what colour to finish in. My mind keeps changing. Red seems to be the popular one but I am considering retaining the blue. Might even see how i go removing the black with acrylic thinners and keep the patina for a while... I was cleaning off some of the grime around the swing arm and noticed it still has a japanese sticker on it. I was curious if someone knows the significance/ meaning of the sticker. Mine has CLl72 and above the number 461 is this a production number cheers Greg Greg
It is a model identification plate. These were used on 'domestic' bikes and not put on the American ones. Did your bike have winkers? I have an early C72 with a riveted plate and my 1961 CB72 also has a riveted plate. Later ones were bonded with adhesive. G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72

It is an adhesive. My other bikes dont have the stickers, must have come off with wear and tear.
No winkers fitted at any point. https://www.flickr.com/photos/125589394 ... 8803534821 I might have to carefully remove with a razor blade when the time comes As far as I know, all US market CB/CL 72's had the Japanese MOT sticker on the swingarm. early models were riveted, later a decal. I do not believe the CA 72's had this sticker, nor did any of the 305 models CA/CB/CL.
I have seen this same sticker, mounted in the same place on the swingarm, on various other domestic model Honda's. C100,C105,S90,C70,CB175. But never on any other US market bikes. Randy
Agreed, my US '63 CL72 has this sticker as does my '63 domestic CL72. My '65 CL77 and '65 & '66 CB77's do not. My domestic CL72 will be painted blue, I don't really like the blue on a CL but since it's such an odd ball with the 360 crank, turnsignals etc. figured the blue will be a fitting color. Dick Johnson
