Dream chain size snafu

Post by mike1969 » Thu Aug 21, 2014 9:28 pm

After buying a chain 520-96 links for my 1965 ca77 found it doesn't fit my sprockets.
Purchased it more than a year ago so I can't send it back.
Anyone have an idea as to what went wrong?

Thanks Stan, I'll order a 525 chain . I researched the posts and found out it was my fault. It mention 520 and 525 chains. Guess I mis-read.

Anyone need a new 520-96 chain?

Re-read the post on chain size. From what I read 520 and 525 have different widths. My problem is the teeth of the sprockets don't mesh with the chain.
I can now see the chain is too narrow. Will the wider chain also mesh better? Is it possible that the sprockets are a different pitch? Don't want to order the wrong chain again. I'm confused.

The "pitch" (distance between the rollers) on 520 and 525 chain is the same.

How is the sprocket?

Chains and sprockets wear out. As the chain wears it gets longer and the sprocket teeth wear to fit the chain. Perhaps your sprocket is as worn out as the chain you are replacing and should be replaced also.

The sprockets do look a little on the worn side. The chain won't fit down into the sprockets. Want to get the bike on the road to see how it shifts before I sink money into sprockets, but I guess I might have to.
