Hello
I am battling a leak from the oil filter cover.
I have
1. replaced both oil seal o rings.
2. replaced the cover for another one
3. measured with calipers for size variations
4. Dropped the oil weight back to 10w30 from 15w 50 with no real change.
5. shaft washer is installed and on slinger side of the locating pin
6. Locating pin is aligned as the cover seats without excessive force, except to overcome the press friction of the o rings.
Initially it was a small leak at the bottom, it now leaks at the top. As the oil passes between the o rings through a gallery at the bottom I initially though the pressure was too high.
Could it be a blocked gallery? I would have expected more oil leaks elsewhere. The motor seems to have the correct cut out head bolts for oil flow.
Considering applying silicon to the cover.
I did not experience this particular issue with the dream motor I built.
regards
Greg
Leaking oil filter cover
If you have the early cover (small opening), both o-rings will be the same 57mm. The later cover (large opening) requires a 74.5mm o-ring inboard, and a 79.5x3mm outboard. There are o-ring kits that do not have the correct outboard piece included. This is most likely what's occurred. The Honda part number for this was 91302-259-000, probably superseded by now. When you install the cover, the outboard o-ring should hold it slightly off of the side cover surface, then tighten with the three bolts for proper compression. Silicon won't help. Regards, Chase

It is the larger opening. The gasket kit didnt have the o rings at all. I had the remnants of another kit ( genuine) which did. I cleaned the surfaces with thinners. I cant understand it . Going to town with my calipers I noted the depth of the cut out recess in the side cover for the o ring was slightly deeper . We are talking 0.1 to 0.15 of a mm. I could not get it to seal. In the end I applied silicon to the outer surfaces and to date it appears to be sealing. Just another challenge! Not sure if the slightly deeper cutout was enough to cause the weep. But for now we are operational. regards Greg
