Heli-Coil Removing

Post by FAST FRED » Tue Apr 22, 2014 9:34 pm

While refreshing My CL77 for the comming riding season, I found My exhust pipe mount bolt hole in the side of the frame wasted from the PO's ovious overtightening and cross threading. I decided to drill the old threads out and install an incert to fix the problem. Now I find out the hole already has a Heli-Coil in it and My cobalt 24/64 drill bit will not cut the stainless coil. Has anyone ever sucessfuly removed a Heli-Coil by sawing, drilling, fileing or any other type of extraction.

Yes - Try to pry up the end with a small jeweler's screwdriver or similar tool until you can grab it with needle-nosed pliers. Then you can carefully twist the end counter-clockwise and pull it out. Kind of hard to explain but you'll get it once you start...

Hard to believe somebody screwed up a Helicoil by cross threading a bolt into it. My guess is the used a metric bolt with an SAE insert or vice-versa. They are spring steel so pretty hard to bugger up. I think I'd clean it out really well with a blast of air and maybe a bore brush and then take a close look at the threads. Might be a UNF insert and a mating UNF bolt will go in nicely.

regards,
Rob

If you can pry out the outer most ring and grab it with a good pair of vise grips it should be able to be pulled straight out. Takes some pulling, but usually comes out in one piece and looks like a spring after its out. That's how I usually take them out. Good Luck!

SUCCESS

Post by FAST FRED » Sun Apr 27, 2014 8:06 pm

SUCCESS, I first went to Heli-Coil's webpage and saw the special removal tool they offer, it's basicly a triangle shaped sharp chisel that you tap into the stainles coil and turn counter clockwise to screw the coil out. Sounded easy enough. Problem was I had tried to drill the thing out and by so doing , I really screw up the first couple of coils and I was unable to catch enough of the first coil to use this method. I could see the installation tab was still attached so I stuck a small hemostat thru the coil , grabed the tab and screwed the coil clockwise to screw the coil thru the hole to the other side where it fell into the fram rail. Done deal. Thanks to all who replied to my post.
