If I have cases that are stained, I use phosphoric acid. It does a very good job of cleaning off any oxides and most stains. I did a set of Triumph '66 cases last summer that came out like new. A common product that is the same stuff, but in jelly form is Aluminum Jelly. I'm pretty sure that is phos acid. If not, it is another type of acid that is not agressive.
I usually follow up with a hot soapy water, either Dawn or a good laundry detergent and a scrub brust to make sure all the acid is gone. I use an old fashioned galvanized wash tub so I can dunk and redunk. Blow it dry with compresses air and sit it in the sun on the blacktop driveway.
I've had very good luck using stainless steel tooth brush size brushes to work on badly stained areas.
Never heard of aluminum shot. That stuff can't be cheap.
