Speedometer gear unit on front wheel of a 66' Scrambler
Moondoggers, I am no expert but here is the method I used to set my front wheel up. I started out by putting the axel in from the left side through the wheel hub, opened up my vice enough and put a shop rag in between the jaws of the vice, laid the wheel on top of the vice so that the axel sat into the jaws. The axel is vertical at this time and the wheel is horizontal. Then I put a hard steel punch in the axel hole so the axel would not be able to turn when I screwed and tightened the nut from the top side. Do not clamp the vice down on the axel, the punch and jaws will stop the axel from turning as you tighten the nut. Put the speedometer drive on the axel making sure the gear drive tits are seated in the hub correctly, you will feel it slip in. The speedometer drive should sit flush with the hub. Then screw the right side axel nut onto the axel allowing the round shaft part of the nut to be facing up, the nut will be against the drive unit. Tighten the nut. You are done. The axel, speedometer drive and nut are all one, you should be able to spin the axle inside the hub. When you mount the wheel back on the forks, align the axel so the speedometer drive (the part that the cable will screw into is on the bottom parrallel to the ground) put your clamps on the axel and tighten, the wheel and drive should be correct.
You don't need to make a special tool, as the nut is put on the axel and tightened before you put the wheel on the bike. If everything is right, the nut is on the inside of the forks and you won't have to ever use a wrench on the nut until the next time you have to remove the axel. I am used to Dreams with the nut on the outside of everything like the early CL. When I finally get to my CL project learning from this thread will help me, too. It is a '65 but I have a set of late forks/DLS-brake wheel so I will be going through this same thing. Thanks LM and Ricky.

For me it was rough having to forget what I know and learn the correct way to ride safely. I did pass though :-) a very valuable course. I'm posting two pictures of the Honda's front wheel for the groups evaluation. Right and left side. Before I take it apart I'd like to get some advice. AdviceWhen you get advice from LM ... take it. Rickytic described it in more detail, but the answer is take the clamps off, get the wheel off and tighten the axle nut (as is) and then put it back on and tighten the clamps.
Make sure the tangs for the speedo drive are in the slots in the wheel and that the flat side of the speedo drive is parallel to the ground before you tighten the clamps.
