Starter clutch question CA77

Post by mythos0512 » Sun Aug 04, 2013 9:50 pm

Question on the Starter clutch for a 64 CA77. What would be possible causes for the Phillips screws to be sheared off the back of the starter clutch? This is the first time I've ever worked on one and I did some searching to find out about the worn springs. (mine were not there) I do have the rebuild kit on order but I'm worried about other possible issues that could've caused this problem. Any insight would be appreciated.

Sounds like something bound the starter clutch to the sprocket while the engine was running. Maybe rollers, springs, caps, etc. That kind of damage is pretty common. I would just put it together properly with only very light lubricant on the springs and caps, nothing on the rollers. Make sure the knock pin is in place too, and stake the phillips screws to keep them in place.

Be sure to inspect the body of the starter clutch for hairline cracks or tears where the rollers reside. If there are cracks the steel will flex and not let the rollers grab the crank well enough for consistent cranking. I have seen this before on starter clutches that had sheared screws.

You might consider finding a complete rotor/starter clutch assembly and replacing the one you have. Those parts are on eBay all the time, and they're reasonable.

one screw vibrates loose, hits the sprocket, breaks, then they all go. that's why the screw heads are staked. a little forever loktite is a good idea as well. pretty common failure on these motors.

Thank you all for the responses. I will check the hubs for any cracks and will stake the screws when they arrive. I was really hoping to do a restoration on her but situations and a determined individual are requiring me to get it running in two weeks for sale to said individual. I will have another in time. They are beautiful bikes. This could free up my time to start on my cd125 restoration.
