im getting > 16 V DC to the battery. ive looked to try and find a voltage regulator with no luck. does my selenium rectifier also act as a voltage regulator?

Rectifier does not act as a regulator. You can use a combination regulator/rectifier from a Kohler stationary engine.

Like this one - make sure it is securely grounded when you install. I would probably run a ground wire from the motor to the attaching bolt of the regulator.
