timing or sticky valve-smoke out of carb

Post by canadianCL77 » Fri Jun 07, 2013 7:34 pm

Well, I finally got it running after carb and petcock rebuild - newly acquired 1967 cl77. They really are great sounding bikes...

BUT, I am getting back pressure coming out of the right side carb. I have been adjusting the timing using lm's method, but to no avail. Then I started thinking that it may be a stuck valve. Is there any chance of this is or is the timing more likely?

Also, my original needles were badly pitted so I am using the jets and needles from the Keyster kit. I have read here that they are no good, but not why. What are the issues with them?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like an intake valve - pull the cap used for adjusting and check it out. If it was timing it would be both cylinders.

I will pull the cover and look. Anything I should look for in particular? Just the arm going up and down? I am new to these bikes. Also, it is the model with two sets of points, so couldn't the timing on just one side be out?

Thanks.

Probably not tiiming - Check valve clearance and valve actuation. A compression check could verify a burned or stuck valve.

Well after the wife and kids went to bed I looked at the valves and all looked good. After the baby woke up this morning I was able to fire it up again and it is only firing on one cylinder. Hopefully just issues with the Keyster carb kit. I know that the floats are a bit high, so maybe it is something simple, but I'll have to find my compression tester(my garage is a nightmare - too many projects at once) and test the cylinders. I guess I should have done that before buying, but it was the friday before a long weekend and I was rushed because we were going away.

Sorry, not really an ignition issue.

Thanks Cadman, I'll let you know how I make out.
