New Pistons for the CA77

Post by willy_j » Mon Jun 03, 2013 8:15 pm

I recently did a tear down to replace the head gaskets on my '67 CA77, and found that my right piston is effectively fried. I am looking at doing a second over piston kit. I need to know what size the sleeves should be bored out to so there is enough room for ring and piston expansion. The following is the kit I'm looking to get;

Has anyone had any experience with these piston kits, and if so, what have your experiences been.[/url]

Give the pistons to the person boring the cylinder. They will give it the correct clearance for you.
Do you know what bore size you have at the moment?

The pistons you show are for the CB and will give a different compression ratio as the crown design is different from the CA.

Also - you need to check what caused the problem with the original piston. If you don't fix that you may have another expensive replacement to deal with.

Please send pics and we can help with the diagnosis...

The machinist that I took some pictures to told me it was from a low octane gas being burned in it. Something I also noticed are some slight differences in the pistons. Oil hole spacings are different on them, as well as the piston that is shot seems to have a taller crown (or at least from compression ring up seems to be higher). Also, the 'good' piston has cb77 stamped into it, as can be seen in the photo. The final killing factor on the right piston is that when I pulled the cylinders off of the rest of the engine, a piece of the piston on the inside around where the wrist pin clip is was broke off and fell out on my starter motor.
