Oil Filter Access Upon Removal of Cover

Does the washer go between the filter body and inside case (that is how mine came apart). Or does the washer go between the filter and outside cover?

Got it all done with no drama. Thanks for the help. An amazing amt of coagulated oil ---> grease had adhered to the inside of the filter. Maybe 1/8''. Glad I took the time, b/c I think prior must not have.
