CB72 Crankshaft

Post by Sooty521 » Fri May 24, 2013 3:20 pm

Hi, I'm new to the forum, having just picked up a CB72 Cafe Racer in boxes, where it has rested for 38 years!!

I am starting the restoration, and have the best part of 2 engines to work with, but only one big end

This looks worn, and I cannot find a replacement anywhere

There are plenty of 305/CB77 cranks around, and I was wondering if they would fit OK?

Any help is much appreciated

Thanks!

CB77 cranks can work in CB72's. There just balanced for the heavier 305 rotating assemlies.

Good luck,
Tim

Thanks Tim, great news!!

I'm not worried about balancing possibly causing some vibration, just want to get it back on the road!

Another member has suggested a CL72 crank, but I'm not sure that has the right oil holes?

Thanks again

CB or CL 72 Crank

Post by conbs » Sat May 25, 2013 3:49 pm

The CB will have a hole in the crank to oil the starter sprocket. CL does not. If could switch out just that end from your CB72 crank onto the CL72 crank. There are alignment issues and taking on that task is not for the faint of heart.

Or you could leave the starter off and use the CL crank.

I have also TIG welded the starter oil port on the cb's or one could epoxy it. If you don't won't the starter.

Thanks guys

I am missing the starter, so was going to use the kick start only anyhow

Sounds like I can get away with the CL72 crank if I do that?

The CB 77 cranks are a lot cheaper though as no cranks at all in UK that I can find and carriage to here doubles the cost!
