Oil Filter Access Upon Removal of CoverOil Filter Access Upon Removal of CoverI want to disassemble and clean the oil filter, but the rotor itself seems to be butting against the edge of the engine case when I try to remove the "rotor cap". I've removed the "C" clip already.
1.) Is it normal for the rotor to be tucked 1-2mm behind the engine case? 2.) How best to remove the rotor cap? No one has mentioned this yet, so I'm asking. Please note the picture I've attached to see what I mean.
Re: Oil Filter Access Upon Removal of CoverIt is necessary to remove the complete filter not just the cover.
Get a good grip on the shaft and pull it out of the engine case and then move the filter to the right and remove all the parts. Use a shaft of some sort and put it in from the rear of the filter and drive the cover out. As usually the cover will have now been hit near the hole you may find the shaft won't go through it. I use a X-Acto knife and ream the hole so the shaft will fit. Put some oil on the cap edges, put the "O" ring on the cap and insert the cap. To install the unit I use a "CHOP STICK" and with the chain on the filter and the shaft in the filter I put them in the hole and put the chain on the crank sprocket with the "CHOP STICK" then put the shaft into the case hole and I'm done. .............lm
Pretty close.
When the shaft moves out about 3/8 inch everything is loose. ...............lm
Don't forget about that washer on the back! When you pull the shaft out it becomes free, sometimes it sticks to the filter rotor and drops off while your working it out, sometimes it sticks to the case, but if you're not aware of it, you might reassemble it with the washer sitting in the bottom of the cover! It's there to keep the rotor from wearing against the case.
Don't take offense but the below is in error.
The washer goes on the shaft held there by the locater (that little pin must be at 12:00 when the shaft is installed) on the shaft then the filter is put on the shaft. The end of the filter has steel and won't damage the case where the filter cap and the outside cover are aluminum and will wear badly if that washer isn't there. Just trying to keep a problem from coming. .............lm
You are correct sir! I am recollecting my experiences with my "previous owner assembled" motor! Can't remember now if it was a case of "no pin" or "washer on wrong side of pin". At any rate, the washer found itself in the bottom of the cover.
So, be ready for that, as most of here are not dealing with bikes we've owned since new. There's also the case of "no washer at all"!
