didn't mean to offend you. thanks for help. by the way, this bike came with in-line conical glass filters in the fuel lines. don't see them in the parts book. could they be part of the problem?

The CB77 doesn't use carb boots(carbs bolt directly to the head) or air boxes. It makes little difference on these early bikes whether the air cleaner is on or not when adjusting the idle. If it's bogging/spitting back when you open the throttle, richen up the low speed mixture by turning the air screws in a small amount. If it's blowing black smoke off-idle lean it out by turning the screws out. Yours sounds like its running a bit lean, dirty low speed jets could also be a factor. You may need to clean the low speed jets. Running some Seafoam in the gas for a while may help.

thanks to the good advice i now have my CB77 running ok. Still runs too lean, though. Jets are clean and correct, needle in the right place, no leaks at the spacer to the head, float height correct, etc. If I am correct that the idle air screw adjusts only the idle mixture, not the mixture at cruising speed, then I'm wondering if experienced hands know a next step to richen the cruising mixture.

You are correct air screw only effects the idle. Raising the needle and or raising the float level will richen the mixture.
