CL72 running problem

Hello,

I've been trying to get my cl72 roadworthy - I adjusted my floats, adjusted my slides, put the needle clip on the second notch from the bottom - it starts and idles well, but when I put it into 1st gear and let out the clutch, it bogs out. Any suggestions?

Adjust the air screws. Adjust the idle mixture by running the screws in or out until it will accept the throttle opening without bogging/spitting back(too lean) or blubbering and blowing black smoke(too rich).

All good advice by Mike. I might add check things like point gap and ignition timing. Make sure the advance is working. Also good or new clean spark plugs go a long way.

Could you define "bogs out" just a bit more?

By "Boggs out" I mean that after it has started running (easily with one or two kicks) and I let it idle for a few minutes, when I turn the throttle the engine responds by sputtering and then dies.

So it runs fine on the idle circuit but not on the main jet. Sounds like a fuel problem, typically too lean. I would try it with partial choke to see if it changes. If it acts like it wants to run on partial choke then the float level is too low, the main jet is plugged, or the needle is in the wrong spot.

There is an outside chance that it is timing but I doubt it. Also an outside chance of moisture in the fuel.

Don't discount that the engine is just plain cold blooded. It might need to warm up before it wants to be responsive. My CL77 really needs to be warmed up thoroughly before she starts to be truly responsive.

But, if she is nice and warm and still hesitates when you start to open the throttle, that says she's a bit lean. I agree with the suggestion to try a little choke to see if that makes it more responsive. Other choice is drop the circlip one groove on the needle which will richen it up a bit when you open the throttle.

Make sure your valves are not too tight. If you did the top end, the valves will get tight as things settle in and you retorque the head. Just pop the covers off and wiggle them with your fingers with each jug on TDC. If they are loose, you should be okay. If unsure, measure them with a feeler or indicator.
