do the carb breather hoses vent behind the transmission or plug into the port on the front of the air cleaner?

Do you mean the fittings on the bottom of the float bowls? Those are overflow hoses, they go down behind the transmission.

"carb breather hoses"? not sure what you are referring to. also we don't know what bike we are talking about. on the dreams and early hawks, there is a "breather" from the cyl head that connects to the air cleaner. it vents the valve guides. on the dreams, there is a carb overflow fitting that simply drains over the swingarm. the hawks have a similar fitting on the float bowl, but IT SHOULD NOT HAVE A TUBE OR BE CONNECTED TO ANYTHING, it will seriously affect your carb tuning if there is a tube there. the carbs on all these bikes also have "breathers" to the atmosphere thru a VERY small orofice in a tube on the upper carb body (also with no tubing attached,1960's, some later models,80's, have the carb vent drained via a tube.
