Handful of questions, 72 differences, +a chrome quoteHandful of questions, 72 differences, +a chrome quoteI know few enjoy reading long threads, so sorry in advance ;). I don't want to start multiple threads.
#1 I've got a '64 CL72 -31741X. Should it be 530 or 520 sprocket? I know BS's book says early 72 were 520. The internet searches I did tell me the only difference is sprocket width, but I hoped to get some confirmation because I don't believe everything I read on forums ;). #2 Any value in superhawk wheels? I have a set that are maybe a 5-6/10 uncleaned. I don't feel like ebaying them. I think if I soda blast them they will look like an 8/10. If anyone on here needs some, shoot me a message. #3 Should the scrambler rims have two inlets for the tire tube. I know this is a stupid question, but I noticed one wheel had two, and another wheel had one for the tube and someone put a bolt thru the other. I'd never relaced wheels and in the past only installed tires/tubes on two piece wheels. #4 If you are curious ( as I was) as to what a current chrome quote might be, I'll give you a heads up on what I found. It was quite hard to find someone in Tulsa, OK who would do it (only one shop in the region I guess?). Everyone else does industrial parts, and most referrrals I got from shops were places that had since gone out of business. They said it won't be triple plated, show stuff ... so I'm not sure of the quality yet. Exhaust (each pipe) 125 Rims (unlaced) 150 each shocks (he said he would cut me a break) $80/pair #5 source for Cl77 handlebars? ohiocycle said he may have a bent used one, which I may do if I become desperate #6 I've got a candy blue cl77 w/o side covers. Should I try to paint some covers blue (It would be single stage) or should I chrome? I am not asking for preference as much as resell. There is a 30 percent chance I get to keep it and I would prefer paint, but I may need to sell it to have $$ to restore my '65 and '64. Thus, I don't want to get beat up on something that I could easily avoid if it would irritate a collector. I have a bit of experience restoring mini trails and any modification away from stock almost always kills the value. This doesn't seem to be the case for Scramblers, though, because people cut the pipes, polish things that were not originally polished, etc. Just looking for some feedback. Always appreciated, will post some pictures of the beginnings of my projects in a moment .. And some photos.
Cl77 before i started on it Now running and cleaned up a bit, needs more TLC which it's getting Cl72. Has one of the worst paint jobs I've ever seen. Goofy handlebars. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of it out of the shed. No carbs, but has compression. Now parts are in a box and frame will be taken to blasters and painted when its warmer. Getting taken apart Only photo I have of the Cl77 '65 I can find. Wasn't a whole lot better looking with the tank and single fender it had. Also in a box. Motor is going to be fully rebuilt. [/img]

All CL72s used 520 chain/ sprockets. #2 They're worth whatever someone will pay for them. #3 That rim is drilled for a bead lock(aka "security bolt") that clamps the tire bead to the rim to keep it from slipping when low air pressure is used off-road. #5 The last set of scrambler bars I bought came from Ohio Cycle(a few years ago) they were re-pops, not quite the same but close. A good set of original bars will be hard to find these days. #6 Scrambler air cleaner covers were never chromed, always painted, in My opinion chroming them hurts the value. '65 YG1

"#1 All CL72s used 520 chain/ sprockets."
I've probably had 50 Scramblers in the last 20 yrs and I've had some seemingly original CL72's that had both 520 and 530 chains, my '65 has 5900 original miles with 530 chain and original sprockets. The one in the question would be a 520. The parts book shows a change in the counter and rear sprocket at frame #CL72-4003062, the counter sprocket at this change has 268 center code (CB72) and if I'm not mistaken all CB72-77 had 530 chains. So how can I ensure I have 520 or 530? The cl77 '65 would be 530 definitely, correct? Two other things.. Can I remove shift shaft without splitting center cases? Mine had been welded, I have a spare. I don't want to cut it off and then find out I need to split the center case ... Finally, can I use a vacuum gauge on these bikes to tune carbs? I was given one, but it says to hook up to a vacuum port ....
The shifter shaft will come out after the clutch/ primary chain is removed from the left side of the engine. 520 sprockets are 1/4 inch thick, 530 sprockets are 3/8 inch. If you want to run o-ring chain, the 520 sprockets would solve potential clearance problems. To use a vacuum guage you can drill the carb spacers and epoxy in a set of brass tubes to hook up the hoses.
